The Peterborough Amateur Radio Club has several repeaters that we would like to link using Mikrotik 5.9 Ghz technology. This linking would also include 5.9GHz Sector antennas that licensed ham radio operators can use to connect to using AREDN firmware. This system will will provide another layer of Emergency Auxilary Communications for the City of Peterborough as well as Peterborough County.

Peterborough ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) or Auxilary Communication Service, is part of the City and Peterborough County and Municipalties Emergency Plan. When an Emergency is activated, ARES/ACS provides backup communications for Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) when all local power and communications fail, such as what happened during the Derecho in May 2022.

Our Objectives

• Create a robust HamNet to provide emergency services within City of Peterborough and Peterborough County.
• Install 5.9 GHz Sector antennas for enhancing emergency communication capabilities for Peterborough ARES/ACS.
• Develop a comprehensive plan outlining the technical specifications and implementation strategy for linking multiple repeaters using Mikrotik 5.9GHz technology, ensuring seamless connectivity and interoperability.
• Configure the network infrastructure utilizing advanced protocols such as BGP, VRRP, OSPF, and SNMP to ensure robustness and reliability, with a particular focus on implementing failover mechanisms to mitigate downtime.
• Facilitate the involvement of the Fleming College Radio Club in the project, utilizing their resources such as towers and radio rooms to augment the infrastructure and expand the reach of emergency communication services.
• Conduct thorough testing and validation of the implemented solution to ensure its effectiveness in providing redundant emergency communications for the City of Peterborough, Peterborough County, and Municipalities, meeting or exceeding established performance criteria.
